Damien Chazelle’s La La Land made a special entry into the history book in winning seven Golden Globes, the most ever, and in each category it was nominated including success for the writer and director as well as actors Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling.
Chazelle’s Hollywood musical was also named Best Motion Picture and danced home with the Globes for Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Original Score – Motion Picture for Justin Hurwitz, and Best Original Song for Hurwitz and Benj Pasek.
Running alongside La La Land in the run-up to the Globes was Barry Jenkins’s highly acclaimed Moonlight with nominations for Jenkins’ screenplay and direction, Mahershala Ali as Best Supporting Actor, Naomie Harris for Best Supporting Actress, and for Nicholas Britell with Best Original Score. On the night, the independent Moonlight shone in taking the Best Motion Picture – Drama award.
Stephen Frears’ Florence Foster Jenkins was in the nominations spotlight for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Drama and actors Meryl Streep, Hugh Grant and Simon Helberg. Natalie Portman was acclaimed for her performance in Jackie as well Viggo Mortensen for his role in Captain Fantastic. John Carney’s Sing Street was also nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Maren Ade and Janine Jackowski’s German comedy hit Toni Erdmann was in competition for the Best Foreign Language Globe and My Life as a Zucchini for Best Animated Motion Picture.
The British television series The Night Manager, a major success with critics and audiences, took the Globe for Best Television Series with Tom Hiddleston, Olivia Coleman and Hugh Laurie taking home Golden Globes for their performances.
Just 24 hours later, La La Land was in the spotlight on the other side of the Atlantic as the film swept the board with 11 BAFTA nominations including Best Film, Best Director and Original Screenplay for Chazelle, Cinematography for Linus Sandgren, Editing for Tom Cross, Production Design for Sandy Reynolds-Wasco and David Wasco, Costume Design for Mary Zophres, Original Music for Justin Hurwitz, and Sound for Mildred Latrou Morgan, Ai-Ling Lee, Steve A Morrow and Andy Nelson. Florence Foster Jenkins landed BAFTA nominations for Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant, costume designer Consolata Boyle, and hair and make-up artists J Roy Helland and Daniel Phillips. Moonlight is a contender for Best Film for producers Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Adele Romanski, for Jenkins’ Original Screenplay and actors Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris. Natalie Portman is nominated for Jackie along with costume designer Madeline Fontaine and Viggo Mortensen is nominated for Captain Fantastic. Maren Ade and Janine Jackowski have a Best Foreign Language Film nomination for Toni Erdmann.
